About Me

I am the author of "The Screenwriter's Bible" -- now in its fourth edition -- which contains the latest on formatting, spec style, script marketing, writing guidelines and more. In my capacity as screenwriter and script consultant, I have developed projects for, among others, the Walt Disney Company, Jim Henson Pictures and York Entertainment. My most recent book is "The Freelance Writer's Bible," written for independent writers. I have written a column for "Script" magazine since 1989, and have published hundreds of articles in national publications. On occasion, I conduct writing courses at the University of Phoenix, where I was honored with the Distinguishing Teaching Award. This meant a lot to me because I see myself primarily as a teacher and communicator. As such, I have lectured or conducted workshops at over 30 universities and conducted courses across the country. I hold an annual retreat at Sundance Resort.

Good luck and keep writing!

David: I don't know what is more appropriate: A thank you or I am amazed. A little over four years ago I retired from a very active professional life. I have regrets regarding that, but what's done is done. Since that time I have found myself becoming increasingly isolated. My response to that was/is, why not get involved in this new world of blogging: Thus my first blog of Feb. 20th.

It would be wonderful if that probe would resonate enough to create a lively, "beat."

Hi David,

I own the, "The Screenwriter's Bible." It's been a tremendous help in navigating the complicated world of screenwriting. I appreciate that in addition to the technical and structural information, it speaks to being a writer and a person as well.

I also enjoy the humor you bring to the subject. It's easy to get caught up and feel a bit desperate. The journey feel a little less harrowing when you can chuckle about it. : )

I just finished my first screenplay and that feels great. It feels like I completed a million mile journey. I know I have lot to learn and have a lot of room to grow, but this was a big step. So, I suppose I'll be reading the book again... and again... and again.

And hey, I got to say this to you directly. And that's pretty cool.

Thank you,

Daniel

Dear Mr. Trottier,

I received "The Screenwriter's Bible" as a gift a couple of years ago, read it straight through, and soon made the semi-finals in the first two screenwriting competions I entered.

The slippers are now worn, the foot spa was regifted and the can opener never worked. But, I still refer to the Screenwriter's Bible.

Thanks Dave!

P.S. Can I call you Dave?

P.S.S. Could you use a Donut Maker?
