Action/Cut Film Seminars & Short Film Competition Founder
Guy Magar is the founder of the Action/Cut Filmmaking Seminar Company which has become the most acclaimed film industry workshop providing intensive 2-day events on the filmmaking process on annual USA tours, which he also recently brought to Canada and Malaysia. He is also the founder of the Action/Cut Short Film Competition which provides a unique opportunity for filmmakers worldwide to showcase their talents and win one-of-a-kind prize packages designed to launch careers in the Hollywood industry.
After graduating from Rutgers University in 1971 with a philosophy degree, Guy began his film career at the London Int’l Film School where he made his first short film which won the Grand Jury Prize at the San Francisco Int’l Film Festival. Upon his return to the USA, he was hired to direct/write/produce an 8-hour prime-time TV miniseries on American history which won the Silver Award at the Chicago Int’l Film & TV Festival. Guy moved to Los Angeles when he was accepted at the prestigious American Film Institute Fellowship Program in 1977.
His first dramatic film made at the AFI won him a 7-year deal at Universal Studios where he began directing network television series in the action/adventure genre. His over 60 show credits include: LA FEMME NIKITA, SLIDERS, HUNTER, BLUE THUNDER, THE A TEAM, LAWLESS, FORTUNE HUNTER, THE YOUNG RIDERS, RAVEN, WEREWOLF, RIPTIDE, NOWHERE MAN, BUCK ROGERS, HARDBALL, LADY BLUE and the pilot/3-hr. Movie of the Week DARK AVENGER. He was nominated for a Golden Reel Award for his television work.
Guy’s writing and directing career branched into feature films where he also became a producer. As a director/writer/producer his feature credits include SHOWDOWN (starring TV Friend’s star Matt LeBlanc’ first film), STEPFATHER 3 which was the first film to launch the HBO World Premiere series, and the cult thriller/horror RETRIBUTION. His most recent directing feature film credit was on CHILDREN OF THE CORN: REVELATION based on Stephen King’s original story for Miramax/Dimension Films.
He has various genre screenplays in development including the action/drama terrorist story DAGGER IN THE HEARTLAND, the franchise horror/thriller rock n’roll/witchcraft project THE OFFSPRING, the action western BOUNTY HUNTER, and the science fiction thriller ENCOUNTER FROM BEYOND which is a thinking man’s realistic INDEPENDENCE DAY genre. Guy just completed an exclusive writing assignment for a historical film on the 12th Century entitled SALADIN which he will direct as his first animated feature. He recently was the Executive Producer and Director for PREMIER CHEFS, a new series for cable networks. His screenplays have won competitive awards through the American Screenwriters Association and the Hollywood Scriptwriting Institute.
He is a member of the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of Canada, a Fellowship Alumni of the American Film Institute, the Independent Feature Project/West, Women in Film, and an honorary member of the Scriptwriters Network where he has lectured on screenwriting. He also heads his own consultancy service for screenwriters, producers, directors, and production companies.
