Books

I've read most of Nigel Tranter's novels, quite an accomplishment since he wrote over 90. I've read the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, and I'm a big fan of Robert Heinlein's earlier science-fiction works.

Movies

I lean toward movies with fantastic writing, two of my favorites being 1966's best picture, A Man For All Seasons, and 1998's best picture Shakespeare in Love. I also admired the writing in Sleepless in Seattle. The hardest thing about a love story is to make the audience doubt the lovers will be together, and that was elegantly solved in Sleepless.

Television

I don't watch much television, except for sporting events and news.

About Me

Born in Tacoma, Washington, I grew up the son of a naval officer, and was a Virginian by the age of seven. I attended the University of Virginia, where I received a commission in the USAF and a degree in Engineering Science. I served four years in the Air Force in San Bernardino and along the way received a Masters in Engineering from the University of Redlands. Leaving the Air Force, I worked at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, until retirement at the ripe young age of fifty-five. While at JPL, I vicariously visited all the planets in the solar system on space projects such as Mariners 9 and 10, Voyager and Galileo.

I returned to Virginia, but wasn’t content to relax in an easy chair so I took a course in screenwriting at my alma mater, where I learned how much I didn’t know. I then studied with UCLA's extension and received a certificate in feature film writing. My UCLA project, Northern Latitude, won three screenwriting contests outright and placed highly in several others. Orcadia, my third screenplay, is the story of a woman who is drafted to nurse Italian POWs in a WWII prison camp on her home islands of Orkney. I’m hard at work on a fourth. My wife and I have one daughter and three grandchildren. We call Charlottesville home.

NEWS FLASH!! On June 7, 2008 Orcadia captured the Dylan Thomas Screenwriting Award at Swansea Life Film Festival in Wales, UK.

Goal

To see at least one of my scripts turned into a movie.
