Born and raised on the eastern shore of Maryland, Ms. Messick showed early signs of a bent toward the arts. As a child, when put in charge of the younger children at her mother’s Day Care, she would direct them in plays and improvisation. When alone Kathy would write stories taking after her father, an oral storyteller, who gathered crowds wherever he was; and built his clientele as a tax accountant due to patrons returning to hear his tales as he found a way to a refund.
After graduating High School Ms. Messick moved to Texas, making a living modeling and finding success in the Theatre Arts, she took off to Hollywood to study. Once there, Ms. Messick studied under Stella Adler and A. Mendoza at the Stella Adler Conservatory. Kathy also trained at Brian Reise Acting Studios where eventually Brian hired her to run his Youth Division. Kathy’s students include Shiri Applebee and Jamie Kennedy whom she granted a scholarship for four years. Ms. Messick now teaches privately and at seminars.
Ms. Messick has worked in all capacities behind and in front of the camera. She has worked in film as well as television and theater but more recently has segued into writing and is proving quite prolific. She brings all her productions skills, acting skills, and what she learned from teaching acting to the page.
Kathy has an array of projects, which span from Animated Cartoon Series, “Cyber Angels” and “Stevie Shortcut” to Reality Shows such as “Slackerville”, “Make-Up Trailers” and “On The Road”. Features include “Everybody wants to Get Into The Act” – The Life & Times of Jimmy Durante, and “Geropods”, a Science Fiction, coming of old age comedy.
Kathy also has a lot of womens’ projects in development, which resulted from her female students stating that they felt like they were auditioning for the same character. Lack of diversity in female roles, no matter what the age or genre, motivates her writing.
Whether observing pockets of culture to write about, teaching in her Santa Monica studio, or pitching one of her recent projects into production; Ms. Messick believes that, “the highest expression of art, in the most perfect form of drama is the teaching of the human heart something about itself.” Whether that is an epiphany or just finding a way to laugh, her mission is to free expression and inspire imagination.
