Description

Despite the ongoing upheaval in print journalism, one enduring fact is the need for copy editors. Whether articles are printed on a broadsheet or displayed on a flat-screen monitor, accuracy, consistency, and style are still crucial elements in the final product.

On Saturday, May 10, UCLA Extension is presenting a special one-day class on the UCLA campus for current and aspiring copy editors. In “Careers for Copy Editors,” participants will learn about freelance, temporary, part-time, and staff positions available to copy editors at newspapers, magazines, and websites. Copyediting jobs in public relations and advertising will also be discussed.

Laurie Gibson, president of Word Association Editing Service, will lead the discussion. She will be joined by Debra Eckerling, freelance editor; Steve Elders, copy chief, Los Angeles Times Sunday Calendar section; and Christine Steele, senior copy editor, The Capital Group Companies.

“Careers for Copy Editors” meets on May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 2232 in the School of Public Affairs Building on the UCLA campus. For more information about the class and/or to enroll, go to www.uclaextension.edu. Then, go to Journalism, Public Relations, and Fund Raising, and click on Courses at a Glance.

Elective credit toward Certificates in Journalism and Public Relations. Advance enrollment required; no enrollment at the door. Questions? Email bbell@ucla.unex.edu.
