Rights

Cathy's profile

I need to find some information about obtainng rights to something copyrighted. I was under the assumption that all I needed was permission from the copyright holder. But do I need to pay them up front? That would suck since I really don't have a lot of money. I would be more than willing to pay if I wrote the script and it was produced.

I have this idea, sorry can't give much detail at this point but it is based on a popular TV show. I know no feature has been made yet. (A couple of tv movies after the series ended) I think it has a lot of potential.

I have a few other things I am working on so if the first one doesn't come through I can fall back on the other stuff.

Zoe needs to go back to sleep because I need to do some work. It's way to early for her to be awake.

Cathy,

As you can see in my profile, I'm a writer/producer. But I currently work in the rights department of one of the largest publishers in the world, so I know a thing or two about this.

Don't try to get the rights, especially since your idea is based on a popular show. The studios most likely own the rights to any adaptation of the original idea, and it would cost you a lot of money to get those in your own hands.

Your best bet is to write the spec and grab the studio's attention. Yes that is just as difficult, but at least you won't have to pay.

Thanks Matt. Your information was most informative.

I was thinking of writing it anyways even if I didn't get the rights because I think I have a good idea. So maybe i can catch Paramounts attention when I finish. It won't hurt to try thats for sure because Life Is Too Short. I don't have to write to make a living. I am writing because I feel like I have always wanted to but didn't because I had convinced myself I wouldn't be able to do it. The thing is if I really want to do something I will not stop until I have completed it.

I am also trying to come up with some kind of idea for a kids show. Nothing really gelling yet. I have a 15 month old and I am always singing to her and playing games with her. She is really smart and is learning sign language and knows some of her colors :-)
