Directing Your Movie: A Two-Day Intensive Seminar

Directing Your Movie
November 1 and 2, Saturday and Sunday, 10am - 5pm each day
UCLA School of Theater, Film and TV
http://www.filmprograms.ucla.edu/short_courses.htm

In this two-day intensive seminar, learn how a movie or television director thinks, how they impact their audience, how they tell a story not in the broad strokes but in the minutia, and how they guide the creative ship. Directing is not only about camera placement, coverage, and the production process - it's about good planning, collaboration, trust, delivery, and the relationship of time to creativity. Through discussion, screenings, and demonstrations, we will explore:

* How directors approach the material.

* Pre-visualization and its importance for a successful director.

* Working with actors and casting directors.

* Directing of the camera: the basic syntax of the movie director.

* Camera coverage and the story: how a director's choice of shot affects an audience in how they see or feel at any moment.

* Practical on-set directing: how the director maintains control and creativity while working in a highly technical and often chaotic environment.

Myrl Schreibman is an award-winning director and producer who holds both a BA and an MFA from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. He is the author of the books "The Film Director Prepares" and "The Indie Producer's Handbook: Creative Producing From A to Z." Myrl's previous students include Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious 2), Patricia Cardoso (Real Women Have Curves), and Chris Chomyn (Bubba Ho-tep).

What students have said about this seminar:

"Great teacher. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone interested in film."

"This guy is awesome. It's like he compressed a year's worth of film school into a two-day experience."

"I would recommend Myrl as an instructor any day of the week."

"I especially appreciated that Myrl shared the lessons he has learned throughout the years. That's the stuff the makes the class important -- not just material you can find in a book."

"Myrl creates an excellent environment. I came in with an open mind and absorbed so much. Myrl accomplishes this with his great communication, sense of humor, and passion."

"Myrl's communication skills are outstanding. He is so experienced and articulates with effectiveness all aspects of the filmmaking process, while focusing on directing."
